I’ve been incredibly busy with work, which is a great thing. I’m extremely passionate about photography and I’m truly fortunate to make a living doing so. From April 27th through May 14th I spent my time in the Columbia River Gorge leading private tours and teaching group workshops. The Gorge is the greatest stretch of accessible waterfalls in the world, and an incredible place to photograph for shooters of all skill levels. Tomorrow is the first show of the season for me, the U-District Street Fair in Seattle, WA. I’ve been hard at work preparing canvas gallery wraps and prints. It’s followed shortly by the Spokane ArtFest, June 1st – 3rd. After ArtFest, it’s all about the Palouse! Scouting trips, group workshops and private tours until June 21st.

Columbia River Gorge

The next two and a half weeks I will be leading private tours and teaching workshops in the Columbia River Gorge, one of my favorite places on Earth. There are an endless array of waterfalls and streams to photograph in lush rainforest environments. To top it off you have lupines and balsam root wildflowers growing together in the fields east of the waterfall district. I will be attempting a daily blog post along the way, using my iPhone to snap some pics and write updates. I will post them on my dedicated Columbia River Gorge Tours and Workshops website. The Golden Tree

Since the inception of my company, I have run my workshops and tours under the banner of ‘Backcountry Photo Tours’. I wanted to do something different, specialize in an area that for the most part was non-existent in the industry. I thought it would be amazing to combine my backpacking experience with photography and take people into the backcountry to photograph scenes off the beaten path. Three years later, I’ve realized that it’s an incredibly small niche, and not a very marketable one at that. Every once in a while I have to explain to a potential client that my tours are car based and hiking is minimal. In order to do more strenuous activity, it has to be a private tour. In a nutshell, ‘Backcountry Photo Tours’ doesn’t describe the majority of my workshop and tour business.

That’s why I have changed the company to ‘Landscape Photo Tours’, which describes exactly what we do. My tours and workshops are about landscape photography in some of the most beautiful and photogenic regions in the States (and eventually beyond). I also think it will improve my SEO, as ‘landscape photography’ is a popular search term.

I also discovered a new niche. I’ve had the opportunity to participate in tours, observe tours, and talk to many former clients of tours to discover what works and what doesn’t. What I discovered was that clients are largely neglected in the majority of tours. Leaders often take too many clients and they shoot for themselves first, putting their clients’ needs aside. I take very small groups, currently at 4 participants, and I work extremely hard with my clients, giving them all the attention they deserve. I’m there for them, not for me, and that in itself is a niche in the competitive world of photo workshops and tours.

The Lightroom 4 class is a comprehensive look at the most popular photo managing and editing software in the industry. You do not need to own Lightroom 4 in order to participate, Adobe offers a free, fully functional trial you can download and bring to class. We will learn how to organize and process images. Participants will dropbox up to five images to me prior, and we will edit them in class. We will also discuss alternative software solutions and what they can do beyond Lightroom.
